The Doctor is the commonly used descriptor for an unidentified Gallifreyan featured in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who. As a Time Lord, the Doctor has the ability to regenerate his own physical form upon death, but always returns with a different physical appearance, thus necessitating a change in actor. To date, there have been twelve different canonical Doctors, seven of which appeared in the original Doctor Who series, four from the 2005 Doctor Who revival series and one, Paul McGann (the 8th Doctor), from the 1996 Doctor Who television movie.
