Tasmania is an Australian island and state. It is 240 kilometres (150 mi) south of the continent, separated by Bass Strait. The state includes the island of Tasmania, the 26th largest island in the world, and the surrounding 334 islands. The state has a population of more than 500,000 people, of whom almost half reside in the greater Hobart precinct. Tasmania's area is 68,401 square kilometres (26,410 sq mi), of which the main island covers 62,409 square kilometres (24,096 sq mi).
Tasmania is the birth place of actor Simon Baker, best known for his work on TV shows such as The Guardian and The Mentalist. He was born Simon Baker-Denny in the city of Launceston on July 30th, 1969.
One of Tasmania's greater pop culture icons is the Tasmanian Devil of Looney Toons fame. The animated character, often referred to simply as Taz appeared in five Warner Bros. film shorts in 1954 beginning with "Devil May Hare". He has enjoyed greater success in later years in various spin-off projects and even headlined his own animated TV series.
