"Pilot" is the premiere episode of the superhero fantasy and teen drama series Smallville, which is based on character features in the Superman family of comic book titles published by DC Comics. The episode was directed by David Nutter with a script written by series developers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. It first aired on the WB Network on Tuesday, October 16th, 2001 at 8:00 pm. A meteor shower hits the small town of Smallville, Kansas, bringing with it, a spacecraft containing an alien child. Jonathan and Martha Kent raise the child as their own and name him Clark. As a teenager, Clark Kent possesses superhuman abilities, but finds himself greatly weakened by the presence of green meteor rock, such as the type that Lana Lang wears about her neck as a necklace. Clark finds himself forming an unlikely friendship with millionaire Lex Luthor, when Clark rescues him after Lex's car goes off a bridge.
