A pirate is a lawless individual who works aboard a ship and makes his living stealing property and/or valuables from other individuals. The act of committing such deeds is called piracy. In modern times, the term is usually applied to people who illegally download movies and music thus putting thousands of hard-working industry professionals out of work (or so they say). There are varying stereotypes associated with being a pirate. This includes wearing an eye patch, having a hook for a hand, a wooden prosthetic for a leg and a pet parrot perched upon ones shoulder.
Piracy may also pertain to the drug trade. Drug traffickers are also referred to as smugglers. This sort of activity can be found in many crime drama television programs such as Criminal Minds, Cold Case and Miami Vice.
Classical pirates are also a popular costume design for people during Halloween.
