A mechanic is an individual who performs maintenance and effects repairs on vehicles. People who work on cars are called auto mechanics, while those who work on other vehicles may be described by the type of the vehicle maintenance that they specialize in, such as airplane mechanics. Mechanics may also be employed to work on non-vehicular devices such as refrigeration units, heating units, robotics and other forms of industrial maintenance.
A fine example of a mechanic featured in scripted television would be Arthur Fonzarelli from the 1974-1984 sitcom Happy Days. Though usually attired in his trademark blue jeans and black leather jacket, Fonzie occasionally appeared wearing his mechanic's uniform. His specialty was motorcycle mechanics.
On the NBC sports drama Friday Night Lights, the characters of Billy and Tim Riggins operate an auto body shop called Riggins' Rigs. The garage evolved into a chop shop so that Billy could earn some extra money in order to support his pregnant wife, Mindy.
A lesser known character with mechanical aptitude would be Jim - a minor character from season one of the AMC television series The Walking Dead. Little was said of Jim's profession prior to the outbreak of a zombie plague, but it is known that he worked as a mechanic in Atlanta, Georgia up until the time of the outbreak.
