A hippie is a member of a counterculture and youth movement active during the mid 1960s and early 1970s. The early hippies inherited the countercultural values of the Beat Generation, created their own communities, listened to psychedelic rock, embraced the sexual revolution, and some used drugs such as cannabis, LSD and magic mushrooms to explore altered states of consciousness. In the United States, the hippie movement is connected to two major historical events; the volatile protests held to renounce US activity in Vietnam and the Woodstock music and art festival held in Bethel, New York from August 15th to the 18th, 1969.
In the UK, the hippie movement was part of the "Mod" scene popular in England during the 1960s. TV shows such as Adam Adamant Lives! often featured characters belonging to this subculture.
On the 1980s comedy series Family Ties, the parental characters of Steven and Elyse Keaton were former hippies, which was in sharp contrast to their ultra-conservative Reaganite teenage son, Alex P. Keaton.
On the Emmy Award-winning dramedy series Monk, the main character Adrian Monk often referred to anyone who was not a straight-laced, law-abiding citizen as a hippie.
On the 2011 MTV animated series Good Vibes, one of the characters was a former hippie and stoner named Lonnie (voiced by Alan Tudyk), who was often seen relaxing on a California beach and hanging out with surfers Mondo and Woodie.
