Charles Townsend is an important and eponymous character featured in the 1976-1980 action/mystery series Charlie's Angels. He was played, or rather voiced, by actor John Forsythe and played a vital albeit minimal role in every episode of the series. Although perceptions might indicate that he would be one of the main characters from the series, Charlie's presence was left deliberately mysterious in that he was never fully seen by the viewer or even by the other characters on the show. In each episode, the character was depicted as a disembodied voice over an intercom that dissemintated instructions to his private investigators, the Angels. Only his liasion, John Bosley ever truly knew what he looked like. The viewer at best caught a glimpse of Charlie's hand on occasion or sometimes saw a view of the back of Charlie's head, but never his full face.
